From August 1902 through December 1946, Fort Oglethorpe
was Chattanooga's military post! Initally established as a major military outpost during the Spanish-American War, the
Fort supported World Wars I and II and was considered the premiere cavalry post of it's time.
Located at the northern gateway to the Chickamauga-Chattanooga
National Military Park, the Fort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Vivian Browne of the Chattanooga Times wrote when the post
closed -
“Fort Oglethorpe’s illustrious military contributions through three wars are inscribed in the nation’s
history, its social contributions, in war and peace, in the hearts of Chattanoogans.”
